Demonstrative pronouns are used to refer to objects or people. There are only four of them. When choosing between them, you consider the correct number (singular or plural) and whether the object or person is near, or far away.

In informal English this and that can be used in the meaning of ‘so’:
He has never come home this late.
If your friend is that strong, why couldn’t he lift the tree trunk?
